What is On Base Percentage in baseball?

On-base percentage presents the ratio of the player’s times-on-base (TOB) to their number of plate appearances. On-base percentage hardly represents a true percentage. It is a substitute for batting average.

In opposition to batting average, On Base Percentage encompasses the number of times the player has walked or hit by a pitch that does not usually rely on bats. It also includes how many times they actually hit the ball. However, a higher OBP is an indicator of a player that is more likely to advance bases.

Purpose of the On Base Percentage in baseball:

  • To determine how many times a batter get to its base
  • To measure a player’s efficiency
